Message from Dr. Jafar Javan,
Director of the United Nations System Staff College and Director a.i. of UNICRI (United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute)
Dear participants, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am pleased to send a brief message for the opening of this important initiative on lifelong learning inaugurated today here in Crotone, in the cradle of ancient Magnagrecia, symbol of coexistence of different races, cultures and civilizations. In my current dual role as Director of the United Nations System Staff College, the training ground for the UN staff and temporarily Director of UNICRI, the UN Institute dealing with crime and justice administration through training and applied research, I have direct experience of how permanent education is a powerful vehicle for development and a necessary tool for the evolution of individuals and communities, at all latitudes.
As you know, the United Nations and all its Member States are committed to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Access to education for all is the fourth among the priority objectives of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, after access to food, the fight against poverty and the right to health.
Goal 4 of the Agenda must be supported by and achieved in Italy as well, and the Government, as a signatory of the 2030 Declaration, has made a commitment to increase access to education for all, to support the fight against illiteracy and to ensure the right to schooling for vulnerable groups. The initiative launched here today by the Italy Education Network is a remarkable example of how the international community can and should maintain its commitment to successfully achieve the objectives defined by the 2030 Agenda. The joint efforts of civil society, the academia as well as local and national institutions will be important to support the initiative and to maintain its high social value. Continuing education, in fact, besides creating more knowledge, is also a crucial vehicle for the cultural and economic enhancement of the territory, especially for the small realities that often represent the hidden, yet most valuable treasures of Italy.

Gentili partecipanti, Signore e Signori,
Sono lieto di inviare un breve messaggio di saluto all’apertura di questa importante iniziativa sul tema dell’educazione permanente che si inaugura oggi qui a Crotone, nella culla dell’antica Magnagrecia, simbolo della convivenza e del crogiuolo di razze, culture e civiltà diverse. Nella mia attuale doppia veste di Direttore dello United Nations System Staff College, il luogo di formazione dello staff delle Nazioni Unite e temporaneamente dell’UNICRI, l’Istituto dell’ONU che si occupa di criminalità e amministrazione della giustizia attraverso la formazione e la ricerca applicata, ho esperienza diretta di come la formazione permanente sia un potente veicolo di sviluppo e strumento necessario per l’evoluzione dei singoli e delle comunità, a qualsiasi latitudine. Come sapete, le Nazioni Unite e tutti i suoi Stati Membri sono impegnati nel conseguimento dei 17 Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile entro il 2030. In tale ambito l’accesso all’educazione per tutti è il quarto tra gli obiettivi prioritari di sviluppo sostenibile dell’Agenda 2030, dopo l’accesso al cibo, la lotta alla povertà e il diritto alla salute. L’obiettivo 4 dell’Agenda deve essere sostenuto e conseguito anche in Italia ed il Governo, come Stato firmatario della Dichiarazione 2030, ha preso l’impegno di aumentare l’accesso all’educazione per tutti, di continuare nella lotta all’analfabetizzazione e di aumentare l’accesso alla scuola dell’obbligo per i gruppi più vulnerabili. L’iniziativa lanciata oggi qui dalla rete di Italia Educativa si colloca dunque a pieno titolo nell’ambito del rafforzamento degli obiettivi internazionali dettati dall’Agenda 2030, che tutti gli Stati Membri delle Nazioni Unite hanno sottoscritto. L’impegno congiunto della società civile, delle università e delle istituzioni sia locale che nazionale sarà importante per sostenere l’iniziativa e per mantenere il suo alto valore sociale. L’educazione permanente infatti oltre a creare più conoscenza è anche un veicolo importantissimo di valorizzazione culturale ed economica del territorio, specialmente delle piccole realtà che costituiscono molte volte i tesori nascosti, ma di più grande valore, dell’Italia.
Vi auguro buon lavoro e tutto il successo per questa bella iniziativa.
